PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governor basketball team scored the first 13 points of the game and never trailed as they downed Douglas 66-56 in the basketball season opener Friday night in Pierre. The Governors held off a Douglas rally in the 4th quarter sd thr Patriots cut the lead to 3 but would get no closer. Pierre had 4 players in double figures led by Jack Maher with 20 points. Garrett Stout added 17, Grey Zabel 12 and Paul Adam 11. KJ Hagins had 14 and Conner Sauvage 13 off the bench for Douglas which fell to 0 and 3 on the season. The Governors shot 47 percent from the field (17 of 36) and went to the free throw line 39 times and made 29 in the game outscoring the Patriot 29-10 at the charity stripe. The 1-0 Governors are back in action later today when they host Spearfish at Riggs High Gym.
