A dog is safe and back with its owners on dry land after it fell through the ice on the Missouri River yesterday (Mon.) afternoon (3pm) in Pierre.
The Pierre Fire Department Rescue Squad responded to the Neltom Drive area in northwest Pierre. The dog had been chasing a goose across the ice, when the dog fell into open water, approximately 50 yards off shore.
A rescue squad member in proper gear was able to get the dog out of the water. The dog then made his way back to shore to his owner.
Pierre Rescue Captain Brandon McCarthy says it’s not uncommon for a pet to chase after something and end up in the water. He says thankfully the owners did the right thing by calling for assistance and not trying to rescue the dog on their own.
The dog was in the water approximately 15 minutes and was in good health when removed.
The Pierre Police Department was also on scene.
