The Pierre Georgia Morse Middle School team got 4th in the state Math Counts Competition. Gianna Stangeland placed in the top 4 so she will be representing the State of South Dakota with 3 others at the national event in Florida.
The top four individuals from the State Competition will represent South Dakota at the 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Fla., May 12-13. The four team members are Megan Zhu of Southwest Middle School in Rapid City, Sampada Nepal of George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings, Vanessa An of George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings, and Gianna Stangeland of Georgia Morse Middle School in Pierre, led by coach Shannon Renkly of George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings.
More than 100,000 students across the U.S. participate each year in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series, a national math competition that aims to build confidence and problem-solving skills for students who participate. Programs like MATHCOUNTS are critical to preparing students to succeed in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) careers of the future.
The state program is sponsored by the South Dakota Engineering Society and 3M – Aberdeen. Leadership at the local levels of the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is provided by members of the South Dakota Engineering Society of the National Society of Professional Engineers.
