YANKTON, S.D. – College football is returning to Yankton. Mount Marty College announced Tuesday that it will add football, targeting full varsity competition in the 2022 season. College football has not been played in Yankton since Yankton College closed in 1984, with the exception of the 2001 University of South Dakota season opener. USD played Wayne State in Yankton that season due to delays in the construction of the permanent roof on the DakotaDome. In a news release, MMC said football is aiming for its first varsity game in 2022. A search for the team’s first head coach will start in May. The team will play its games at Crane-Youngworth Field, where the Yankton High School team plays. The program is estimated to bring in 100 additional students to MMC’s Yankton campus.
