This (April 8-12) is National Boys and Girls Club Week.
Capital Area Counseling Board of Directors member Tad Perry says the Boys and Club of the Capital Area has innovative programs focused on academic success, good character and healthy lifestyles.
BGCCA director Becky Spoehr says they’re having special events and themes to celebrate throughout the week.
- Monday was stand up and celebrate– Club Members giving tours of the Club to the public;
- Tuesday is stand up against bullying– Club Members will participate in cheer-off rallies featuring “Be a Star”;
- Wednesday is stand up for a healthy lifestyle– Club Members will participate in a dodgeball game against the Pierre Police Department recruits;
- Thursday is stand up for the future– youth will dress up as their selected career profession; and
- Friday is stand up for all youth– BGCCA will celebrate their Youth Development Specialists.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area has been serving Pierre since 1957.
Since 1941, the Boys & Girls Club movement has celebrated National Boys & Girls Club Week by recognizing the service Clubs bring to communities.
BGCA research shows youth who attend a Club do better than those nationally. For example, 73 percent of low-income Club members ages 12-17 who attend the Club regularly report receiving mostly As and Bs, compared to 69 percent of their peers nationally.
