(WNAX)- US District Judge Charles Kornman ruled yesterday on IM-24, finding it unconstitutional. South Dakota voters passed IM-24 in November to ban out of state contributions to ballot question campaigns.
Former Attorney General Marty Jackley led the legal challenge and said the ruling is a new opportunity for transparency and reform for South Dakota campaign finance laws.
South Dakota businesses and media interests, including the South Dakota Broadcasters Association (which the Dakota Radio Group is a member) brought the matter to court.
According to Jackley, the Attorney General is responsible for the next step.
The Attorney General’s Office issued a statement saying that they respect the decision and are reading and examining option available to the office that best protect the interest of the people of South Dakota.
