PIERRE, S.D. – A former Pierre Governor football, basketball and baseball standout has been arrested on a number of charges including first degree burglary. KSFY-TV and KELO-TV in Sioux Falls are reporting on it’s website that Peyton Zabel was booked into Minnehaha County jail around 6 a.m. Saturday, according to jail officials. Zabel plays both baseball and football at Augustana University in Sioux Falls. He also had a standout athletic career at Pierre Riggs High School, where he led the Governors to the 2017 Class AA football title. He also pitched Pierre to the 2017 State American Legion Basetball Championship. According to jail records, Zabel was booked on burglary, disorderly conduct, and underage alcohol possession charges. Augustana’s Dean of Students office released a statement saying that the school was investigating the matter with authority’s but would not comment due to federal student privacy laws. The school goes ons to say that per the Augustana University Code of Conduct and the Athletic Code of Conduct, the student-athlete is suspended indefinitely from all athletic activity until the investigation is completed.” Zabel was the Player of the Year in Class AA High School football in 2017, Class AA Basketball for 2017-18 and High School Baseball in 2018. No other details about Zabel’s arrest have been released.
