A handful of local non-profit organizations have teamed up this summer to provide backpacks of food for eligible kids in the Pierre and Stanley County school districts.
Feeding South Dakota central operations manager Russ Hofeldt says during the school year, over 30% of the children in Hughes (31%) and Stanley (35%) counties participate in the US Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch, School Breakfast Program. He says to help fill the food gap, they’re facilitating the Summer BackPack Program.
Hofeldt says distribution in Hughes and Stanley counties is done on Thursdays and Fridays at Stanley County Elementary School, Southeast Pierre Community Center, Oahe Family YMCA and the South Dakota Urban Indian Health Clinic.
This is the second year Capital Area United Way has provided funding for the Summer BackPack program for kids in the Pierre and Stanley County school districts.
