BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston announced on Tuesday their intentions to eliminate their respective football programs. SCSU also announced the elimination of its men’s and women’s golf programs, and the addition of men’s soccer for the 2020-21 academic year. According to a release from SCSCU, the move comes to ensure Title IX compliance and to address financial sustainability. The decision will impact 115 students, seven head and assistant coaches, and two graduate assistant coaches, according to the release. The NSIC had recently adjusted its requirements for conference membership, requiring a certain number of sports offerings but not requiring specific athletic programs. The league will also waive the inter-conference transfer restrictions for athletes whose football programs have been eliminated.
