SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Pierre Governor head football coach Steve Steele has been Coach of the Year by the South Dakota High School Coaches Association. Steele guided the Governors to an unbeaten season and their third consecutive Class 11AA Football Championship in November. The Governors set a number of school and state records during the season including scoring 703 points which is the most ever in South Dakota High School Football History in any class. Steele beat out former Governor head coach Jayson Poppinga of Sioux Falls O’Gorman for the Coach of the Yea award. Other nominees were Rich Lundstrom-Canton, Jeff VanLeur-Bridgewater-Emery and Chad Williamson-Colman-Egan.

Other Coach of the Year Awards by the State High School Coaches Association included Rosemary Bellum of State Champion Watertown in Volleyball where Linda DeBoer of Miller was a nominee. Tyler Schuring of Yankton in Soccer, Karol Patterson of Wall in Girls Cross Country and Chris Riley of Belle Fourche in Boys Cross Country. Marla Tegethoff of Platte-Geddes in Competitive Cheer and Megan Smith of Huron in Competitive Dance. These coaches will be recognized at the annual awards banquet to be held in Rapid City this summer in conjunction with the South Dakota Coaches’ Clinic.
