The requirement that students be enrolled in the district to be eligible for the free meals provided by schools during the closure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic response has been lifted.
Pierre School District food service director Liz Marso says the US Department of Agriculture has waived the requirement, making the grab and go meals available to all kids 18-years-old or younger.
Marso says with the change, people no longer have to write down the names of the students they’re picking up meals for. She says each child is eligible for one meal package per day which can be picked up at any of the four distribution locations in Pierre. Each package contains a hot lunch and sides and a cold breakfast and students do not have to be present to pick up the meals. If not eaten within two hours of pickup, Marso says meals should be refrigerated.
The Pierre School District white food service trucks will be at:
- the Southeast Community Center Parking Lot (2315 E Park Street) and the Georgia Morse Middle School back Highland Parking Lot (309 East Capitol Ave.) from 11:30am-12:15pm
- Buchanan Elementary (100 North Buchanan Avenue) and Jefferson Elementary (900 N. Poplar Ave.) from 12:30–1:15pm.
