MITCHELL – Mitchell is among schools proposing that fan attendance be limited. Activities director Cory Aadland is proposing that attendance at ticketed events be in the second tier in the four-tiered model suggested by the task force recently set up by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
In the second tier, students would be allowed to attend, while players, coaches and cheerleaders would be given four tickets to distribute and to be paid for at the gate. This will be in force for fans of Mitchell and visiting teams.
Among other ESD schools:
- Pierre is mandating wearing masks on team buses. Attendance is being encouraged, but fans are being asked to respect safety concerns of others and look after themselves.
- Huron has a three-tiered plan. In the first, open attendance would be allowed and it would be recommended for coaches and managers to wear masks. In the second tier, coaches and managers would be required to wear masks and attendance would be prioritized by, in order, parents, siblings, student body and the public. The third tier would be the suspension of all sports.
- Harrisburg is recommending masks for spectators and mandating them for team personnel during transportation. Fan attendance will be in four stages. “Green” gives players, cheerleaders and band members six tickets to distribute. “Yellow” allows four. An “orange” stage, which would be forced by COVID-19, would allow two family members per player, cheerleader or band member. “Red” would mean no spectators.
- Brandon Valley is limiting fans to students and family members of team personnel.
- Brookings is considering limited attendance. Bobcat football games are played at SDSU’s Dykhouse Stadium and soccer is played at the city-owned Fishback Soccer Complex.
