Election season is going to be here before you know it and there are still questions on how votes will be counted this year. Last week, members of the Government Operations and Audit Committee had lots of questions. At this meeting, folks asked South Dakota Secretary of State Steve Barnett about mail-in and absentee ballots.
Senator Susan Wismer of Britton said voters are getting a lot of misinformation.
Wismer says legislators have to be careful in criticizing the election system.
Sue Peterson of Sioux Falls, committee chair, said there needs to be a better effort in explaining how the system works.
Barnett told the committee that elections are governed by state law, but each county is responsible for implementing the rules and regulations. In order for this election to be successful it will take corporation and understand from many parties and folks across the state.
