With warm temperatures, low relative humidity and increasing southerly winds, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for central South Dakota this (Nov. 6) afternoon. The National Weather Service says parts of the state will reach record or near record high temperatures and minimum relative humidity is expected to be around 15% in central South Dakota. The grassland fire danger index will reach the very high category today in Stanley, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman and Buffalo counties in central South Dakota. It will reach the high category in Sully, Potter, Edmunds, Dewey, Walworth, McPherson, Corson and Campbell counties in central South Dakota. The National Weather Service says very poor weather conditions or a very low moisture content of grasses and other dry organic material on the ground indicate dangerous burning conditions exist. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Fires will spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. The current outlook for tomorrow afternoon shows the grassland fire danger index will reach the moderate to high category for much of the state. The Grassland Fire Danger Index contains five categories:
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very High
- Extreme
