PIERRE – Concerns about winter and spring sports from Native American schools will be addressed at a special meeting of the SDHSAA Board of Directors on Tuesday.
Tribal and on-reservation state schools are proposing amendments and additions to SDHSAA rules that would only be applicable for this school year. A letter sent by Little Wound School Superintendent Charles Cuny Jr. and Pine Ridge Principal Michael Carlow asks for consideration to have those schools who cannot participate in sports due to COVID-19 restrictions form their own winter and spring sports leagues, which would begin shortly after a vaccine is available. It also asks for students who are barred from participating or chose not to participate due to COVID-19 to have a full season of high school sports next year, including those who turn 20.
The meeting also will include a public forum and discussion on the start dates for winter sports competition. It will begin at 10:30 AM Central Time on Tuesday at the SDHSAA office and be livestreamed on the SDHSAA website.
