The Christmas at the Capitol holiday display in Pierre kicked off with the Grand Tree Lightning Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda last night (Tues.).
Governor Kristi Noem says the display reminds her of the beauty around us, despite the challenges that 2020 has thrown our way.
This year’s featured tree is a 42 foot Engelmann Spruce donated by Bryan and Lori Stahl of Onida. The tree was cut down to about 26.5 feet and was decorated by the South Dakota Board of Nursing and South Dakota Nursing Association. 2020 is the Year of the Nurse and Noem says it’s especially appropriate this year.
The Frank and Beth Marnell family of Pierre had the honor turning on the display. The Marnells adopted their four children Ariell, Laiken, Lander and Maury.
This year’s theme is “Deck the Halls.” There are about 80 trees decorated by volunteers from communities, schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and state government offices.
The children’s area on 1st floor will not have a make and take craft this year. However, children can write letters to Santa at home and bring them to the Capitol. Santa’s mail box is located on the first floor by the South Dakota First Ladies and First Gentlemen Exhibit. Letters will be mailed to Santa in time for Christmas.
Folks who aren’t comfortable coming to the Capitol in person can view the Lighting Ceremony, the trees and some of the entertainment via the Christmas at the Capitol Facebook page and Instagram account.
This year’s display is open from 8am-10pm daily (including holidays and weekends), from today through Dec. 26.
