A display of over 800 empty chairs was setup in Hilger’s Glutch in Pierre yesterday (Thanksgiving Day) as a memorial to the South Dakotans who have died so far from COVID-19.
One organizer from Pierre– Ashley who didn’t want her last name to be used, said the display was intended to visualize the losses caused by COVID-19.
Ashley’s husband Joseph spoke to a live Facebook video stream at the start of the memorial.
A Native American family who has suffered loss because of COVID-19 drove to Pierre to perform a spiritual song, prayer and blessing on the chairs.
The chairs were displayed in a cross formation to face all four directions and honor Native American communities that have experienced a larger than average number of deaths because COVID-19.
Stop the Spread SD organized the display. You can watch the video on the group’s Facebook page.
