If you aren’t included in one of the five groups of people considered to be part of Phase 1 of the South Dakota Department of Health’s COVID-19 vaccination plan, it’ll likely be several weeks– if not a few months– before you’ll get your turn.
Information from Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre says the general public will likely be offered the vaccine at some point this spring. Children will not yet be vaccinated because trials of the vaccine in children are currently ongoing.
The covid.sd.gov website shows the state has basically finished Phase 1 Group A and is currently giving the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine to people included in Groups B and C. Those people include:
- nursing home and assisted living residents long-term care residents
- other healthcare workers
- public health workers
- emergency medical services
- law enforcement
- correctional officers
Avera is the distributing entity for the COVID-19 vaccines in central South Dakota. They’re collaborating with Sanford and various long term care facilities to determine how to allocate the vaccine based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state officials, positivity rates and national best practices.
