Firefighters are still on the scene of a grass fire that started late yesterday morning (Jan. 14, 2021) north of Pierre near the Oahe Dam.
Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department chief Doug Hinkle says containing the fire was a huge inter-agency effort.
Hinkle says 40+ mph wind gusts and extremely dry conditions made fighting the fire even more challenging.
The fire in the Peoria Flats area burned an estimated 400-450 acres. The preliminary cause is thought to have come from some work being done on an irrigation pivot.
