At midday today (Jan. 15, 2021), firefighters remained on the scene of a grass fire that started yesterday (Jan. 14, 2021) north of Pierre near the Oahe Dam.
Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department chief Doug Hinkle says containing the fire in the area known as Peoria Flats continues to be an inter-agency effort.
The fire burned an estimated 400-450 acres. The preliminary cause is thought to be from work being done on an irrigation pivot.
Hinkle says for a short period of time last night some of the firefighters had to leave the Peoria Flats fire to respond to a fire in the Grey Goose area.
Hinkle says the chicken coop was empty at the time of the fire.
A National Weather Service certified weather station at the Oahe TV office in downtown Pierre clocked a 54mph gust again last night (Thurs.) and a 52mph gust overnight Wednesday.
