Nebraska man sentenced for robbery committed 5 years ago when he was a teenager

(KMIT)- A Nebraska man who robbed a Mitchell bank just over five years ago was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.  22-year old Jose Campos of South Sioux City was sentenced to 25 years in prison with 20 years suspended on a charge of first-degree robbery.  In November of 2015, Campos robbed First Dakota National Bank, entering the bank and sitting for nearly an hour until the other customers left the building.  He then pulled out a knife and demanded money from the bank tellers, forcing one to walk outside with him.  Campos fled in a vehicle that was parked nearby.  He had also been charged with kidnapping and attempted kidnapping.  Those charges, along with an additional robbery charge, were dropped as part of a plea agreement.  Campos spoke in court, saying he was deeply ashamed of his actions.  In suspending 20 years of the sentence, Judge Chris Giles said Campos expressed great remorse for his actions, also noting Campos’ youth, the fact that he had no criminal record when the robbery was committed, and that Campos turned himself in to authorities in California.
