PIERRE – Wrestlers Marlee Shorter and Trey Lewis are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 23.
Shorter won all three of her matches at the East/West Duals by fall and is 15-1 this season.
Head Coach Shawn Lewis said of Shorter: “Marlee is a multi-sport athlete that has come in and picked up wrestling at a very fast pace. Her dedication to getting better has been noticed by her coaches from the very first weekend out on the mat. Most people would probably not outwardly think Marlee is a wrestler as she has a very quiet and has a studious look about her. Don’t be fooled by that impression as she is a very fierce competitor when the whistle sounds. Marlee is a great example of when someone comes into something new and they are willing to put in the work that the results can happen quickly.”
Lewis is not the regular 145-pound varsity wrestler, but has been called upon lately, including in the January 22 dual against Brandon Valley, where he registered a 5-4 win over the Lynx’ Cayden Langenhorst. The next day in the East/West Duals, Lewis pinned third-ranked Oakley Blakemon of Spearfish. Lewis is now 13-3 this season and has beaten the third- and fifth-ranked wrestlers at 145 pounds and the seventh-ranked wrestler at 152.
