The staff of state parks in District 12 was honored with a teamwork award at the South Dakota Division of Parks and Recreation’s annual meeting held virtually in December.
The award was presented to the team in recognition of their efforts to renovate the resort at Spring Creek Recreation Area all while operating their parks during a record year.
“The team was able to get much accomplished in a very challenging year,” said regional park supervisor Pat Thompson. “We were short of seasonal help and there was additional work to do, yet this team got the job done.”

Long-time employee Dennis Williams was honored with the South Dakota State Park’s Distinguished Service Award at the division’s annual meeting held virtually in December.
“Dennis has been employed with Game, Fish and Parks for over five decades,” said State Park Deputy Director, Al Nedved. “He has worked with many different aspects of facility development and resource protection within the department which makes him a very valuable employee.”
Williams began work with the Department of Game, Fish and Parks in 1965 as a park planner. He has since held the positions of Capital Development Project Manager and spent 15 years as the department’s Engineering Supervisor before taking the Environment and Cultural Resource Manager position in 2004.
Williams retired from the department this week after 56 years. “Dennis will be greatly missed in the workplace, but his service to the people of South Dakota will be enjoyed for generations to come,” added Nedved.
Judy Smith was honored with the Award of Appreciation at the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ Division of Parks and Recreation’s annual meeting held virtually in December.
Smith is a senior secretary for the Division of Parks and Recreation in the Pierre office.
“Judy is a valuable asset to the division,” said Al Nedved, state parks and recreation deputy director. “We were fortunate to have her maintaining office operations while staff adjusted to remote work last spring. State Parks had a busy year in 2020, and Judy was responsible for fulfilling a record number of online purchases of park entrance licenses.”
Smith worked for Game, Fish and Parks from 1993-2001 She returned to the department in 2018 as the parks’ division secretary.
