SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State’s Myah Selland was named Women’s Player of the Year and coaches from South Dakota schools were named Coaches of the Year in the Summit League basketball postseason awards, announced Thursday.
Selland, whose season recently ended with a knee injury, averaged a league-leading 19.2 points per game with 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, five double-doubles and six player of the week honors.
Selland’s head coach, Aaron Johnston, won the Summit League Women’s Coach of the Year honor for the fifth time. Johnston led SDSU to an unbeaten 14-0 record in league play.
South Dakota’s Hannah Sjerven was named as the league’s defensive player of the year. Sjerven led the league with 2.45 blocks per game.
Sully Buttes alum Chloe Lamb of USD was named to the all-conference first team. Lamb is averaging 16 points per game and is in the top 25 in Division I with 43 percent shooting on three-pointers. Sjerven is also on the first team with Selland and her SDSU teammates Paiton Burckhard and Tylee Irwin.
USD’s Madde Krull made the all-newcomer team.
South Dakota’s Todd Lee is the Men’s Coach of the Year. After the Coyotes started 0-5, Lee led them to an 11-4 league record, just percentage points out of first place.
Senior Stanley Umude of USD was named to the all-conference first team with teammate A.J. Plitzuweit, who recently had a knee injury that ended his season. South Dakota state guard Baylor Scheierman was also named to the first team.
Plitzuweit also was named as the league’s Newcomer of the Year. In conference play, he averaged 21.4 points.
