The South Dakota Department of Health has reported two cases the “UK variant” of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7 variant) have been detected in South Dakota.
Both cases were in Minnehaha County and there was no known history of traveling. Neither patient was hospitalized and both have since recovered. The findings were verified by an out-of-state commercial laboratory.
Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon says this variant is something the Department and partners have been closely monitoring. She says current COVID-19 vaccines have proven safe and effective against this variant.
Malsam-Rysdon continues to encourage South Dakotans to get tested if you develop COVID-like symptoms and get vaccinated as soon as your turn becomes available. She says proper hygiene is always important– wash your hands regularly, stay home when you are sick and wear a mask when it is appropriate.
