A groundbreaking ceremony was held today (March 29, 2021) for the new Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Bridge over the Missouri River connecting Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Fort Pierre mayor Gloria Hanson says it’s a busy bridge.
Pierre mayor Steve Harding says the new bridge will be nice for vehicle traffic, but also for pedestrians.
Both towns were given the opportunity to pay for extra features on their side of the bridge in the plaza area. Hanson says Fort Pierre’s goal was to get people closer to the River.
Harding says it’s exciting to see work on the new bridge happening at the same time and in the same area as the new drinking water treatment plant.
The $49 million bridge replacement project is anticipated to be open for traffic in late 2022. When completed, the new bridge will be 10 feet over– toward the train bridge– from where the current bridge is.
