The grassland fire danger index is in the “extreme” category this afternoon (Mon.) across the entire State of South Dakota as a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7pm CT.
The National Weather Service says strong winds combined with low humidity, dry ground and minimal snow cover create conditions where a fire will start easily and spread quickly. Because of the high wind speed, there’s potential for downed power lines, which could spark a fire. Winds will gust as high as 65 to 70 mph in the central part of the state into this evening.
The NWS says advisory strength winds are expected to persist later tonight and tomorrow with relative humidity likely falling into the teens before and after the cold front passes through the region. No outdoor burning of any kind should take place.
