It’s crazy to think this, but I’ve lived here almost a year. I’m not going to lie, this has been one of the hardest years of my life. I really appreciate you stick with me and supporting me through this crazy time. But as I was reflecting on this past year, I realized that there’s so much to see in South Dakota and I’ve only seen a fraction of it. So I’m going to do a better job of sharing local adventures that you can go on here in the state of South Dakota. One of my Minnesota friends went on a haunted ghost tour of South Dakota over this past week. She shared more with me about South Dakota than I even knew. So this week, we are looking at haunted places in South Dakota. If you believe in this type of stuff and are up for a spooky adventure, here are some of the places you should visit!
- Sica Hollow State Park- It’s thought that the park is haunted by Native American sports. Folks have reported seeing the stream turn red (could be the iron deposits), earing drums, war calls, and other noises.
- Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills- Legend has it that a guy fished the lake year-round. One winter day he died there and his body was found in the lake. Folks have reported having lines torn, seen cracking in the ice when there shouldn’t be, and other not normal things!
- Mount Moriah Cemetery- This is home to multiple wild west folks like Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock. Folks have reported seeing spirits walking around at night and opening gates and stuff like that.
- Laframboise Island in Pierre- Located in our backyard, folks have reported feeling temperature changes, strange noises, and other things. Some have even reported seeing a boy by the river that will lead you into the forest and disappear.
- Orpheum Theatre in Sioux Falls- It’s thought that a ghost named Larry is there. Objects will appear and disappear. One actor claims to have seen a man in the balcony then was knocked out by two sandbags.
- Mount Marty College- Apparently there are a lot of sports that appear in different ways there. They say that room 200 has been locked because it was always haunted. A man is thought to haunt the rooms and a woman the elevator.
- Devil’s Gulch- There’s a legend here that I don’t quite understand. It has to do with kidnapping and some lovers. It is thought that the lovers haunt the grounds. Folks who have visited have heard noises and saw the lovers hanging out.
- Lucky Nugget Casino Deadwood- Folks have reported smelling perfumes, seen phantoms/ghosts wandering around. They’ve even heard footsteps and see shadows of folks when there was no one there.
- Old Minnehaha Courthouse- Visitors have reported hearing someone falling down the stairs and when they check it was no one. They’ve also heard voices and footsteps in places where no one is.
- Bullock Hotel in Deadwood- Seth Bullock was the sheriff of town at one point. It’s thought that he haunts there. Folks have heard the piano playing when no one was there. Folks have even reported seeing things being thrown around when no one is throwing stuff.
I got all of my information from the Travel South Dakota Website and Haunted Rooms America South Dakota Website. You can check them out by clicking on the hyperlinks on the website titles. Let me know if you go to one of these places. I may have to check a few of them out in the next few weeks.
