BRANDON – Craig Nelson is the new boys basketball head coach at Brandon Valley, succeeding Brent Deckert, who stepped down after this past season.
Nelson has been the head coach for the last nine seasons at Sioux Falls Washington, where he compiled a record of 121-83 and led the Warriors to six state tournament appearances and two runner-up finishes in AA.
Nelson returns to Brandon Valley, who hired him just after his graduation in Northern State in 2008. He served four years as an assistant coach to Deckert before going to Washington.
Deckert was the Lynx’ head coach for 21 seasons and led Brandon Valley to the 2019 state championship and two runner-up finishes. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer last August and is undergoing gene therapy treatment while continuing to teach.
