Abby Johanneson, a fifth-grade student at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Yankton, is the winner of the 2021 South Dakota Arbor Day Poster Contest. Abby’s poster was chosen out of 626 entries from fifth graders across the state.
The 2021 contest theme was “Trees Are Terrific…and Energy Wise!” Arbor Day is celebrated annually on the last Friday in April, with individuals and groups encouraged to plant and care for trees.
Johanneson will receive a $125 cash prize and a certificate of achievement. In addition, her poster will be featured on the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Arbor Day Poster Contest Calendar.
Johanneson’s teacher, Isaura Solis, will receive $175 to purchase educational supplies.

River Drury, a fifth grader from the Haakon School District in Philip, was selected as the second-place winner. Drury receives a $100 cash prize and a certificate of achievement.

The third-place winner Aleah Hettich, a fifth grader from the McIntosh School District in McIntosh, receives a certificate and a $75 cash prize.

The top 12 posters will be featured in the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest Calendar.
The annual Arbor Day Poster Contest helps promote the importance of Arbor Day and is open to all South Dakota fifth graders.
