UPDATE (3pm CT):
A private foundation based in Franklin, TN, is providing the funds to pay for South Dakota National Guard soldiers to deploy to Texas to help secure the border between the United States and Mexico.
Ian Fury, a spokesperson for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, said in an email to DRG Media Group, “The donation was made by Willis and Reba Johnson’s Foundation and was made directly to the state of South Dakota. Governor Noem welcomes any such donations to help alleviate the cost to South Dakota taxpayers.”
Earlier today (June 29), Noem announced she’s sending up to 50 of the state’s National Guard troops to Texas to help secure the border between the United States and Mexico. She says the border is a national security crisis that requires the kind of sustained response only the National Guard can provide.
South Dakota Adjutant General Jeff Marlette and the South Dakota Department of the Military are working with their counterparts in Texas to finalize the details of this mission. The initial deployment to the border will last for between 30 and 60 days.
For operational security reasons, specific names of units, number of members and mission specifics will not be released.
