Over 181-thousand people (gate attendance = 181,459) attended the South Dakota State Fair in Huron (Sept. 2–6, 2021) this year, spending a combined total of over $2.5 million.
The state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources says the dollars were spent on purchases of goods, beverages, specialty concessions and carnival rides.
The 2021 State Fair hosted:
- just shy of 2,000 campers
- 597 booths rented to 305 different vendors
- more than 1,800 exhibitors entering more than 9,500 exhibits in open class livestock and non-livestock competitions
- 5,470 education entries on display in the Arts & Education Building
- more than 8,200 4-H display exhibits, livestock exhibits and youth in action entries
- 360 FFA exhibitors showcased just over 975 entries
- 400 students and teachers took part in the SD’s Largest Classroom
- dozens of events and activities that drew big crowds
The 2021 fair also marked the beginning of the transition for livestock and equestrian events to the Dakota Events CompleX. The DEX will be up and running in time for the 2023 State Fair.
The South Dakota Department of Revenue says $211,651.05 in taxes were collected from the 2021 South Dakota State Fair (Sept. 2-6, 2021) in Huron. Of the tax collected, $112,182.81 was state sales tax, $48,541.72 was Huron’s municipal sales tax, $14,943.97 was Huron’s municipal gross receipts tax, and $35,982.55 was state tourism tax.
