The Stanley County GOLD (Greater Opportunities for Learning & Development) afterschool program is hosting an art show as part of nationwide Lights On Afterschool events today (Oct. 28, 2021).
From 4-5:30pm, the GOLDkids will display their “Art Superheros” projects. Works and activities displayed are inspired by artists Picasso, Kandinsky and Chihuly. Parents and interested community members are welcome to visit. At the art show, parents and supporters can sign a petition that urges lawmakers to build on current local, state and federal investments to sustain and grow afterschool programs here and across the nation.
The current Stanley County GOLD Program opened in 2019 with a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the South Dakota and United States Departments of Education. It now serves 110 students annually, providing homework assistance, summer and afterschool academic enrichment and a range of programming. Some of the programming includes 4-H youth development, social/emotional learning, science, art, physical education and recreational opportunities. The program is hosted by the Community & Youth Involved Center in collaboration with the Three Rivers Special Services Cooperative and the Stanley County School System. Over 20 local organizations are active partners in providing services to the GOLDkids.
Nationally, Lights on Afterschool is celebrated to call for:
-
expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one
-
discussing the benefits of afterschool programs, including inspiring children to learn, keeping them safe in the hours when juvenile crime peaks
-
giving working parents peace of mind that their children are safe and supervised after the school day ends
