The South Dakota Discovery Center in Pierre is hoping to find a new location.
Executive Director Rhea Waldman says the Discovery Center has been part of South Dakota and the Pierre/Fort Pierre communities for over 30 years. She says their current building is showing its age.
Waldman says they have a goal in mind for what they’d like their new space to accomplish.
Tom LaFave volunteers at the Discovery Center and is a member of the task force looking into finding a new location. He says there’s a lot of potential for programming if they have more space.
While many people think of the Discovery Center as a kids’ museum, but Waldman says they’re much more than that.
By working with an architect, Waldman says they’ve found two potential sites they could build a new Discovery Center– one in Pierre and one in Fort Pierre. Those locations are among the images below.
Waldman is asking people to fill out a survey about the South Dakota Discovery Center.
In the late 1980s, the idea of a science center in Pierre was championed by Mayor Grace Peterson and many others. The Discovery Center became the largest of the lasting legacy projects that took place in over 300 cities across the state for South Dakota’s 100th birthday in 1989.
