Based on November 1, 2021, conditions, South Dakota’s 2021 corn crop is forecast at 774 million bushels, up 7% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 5.65 million acres, up 27% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 137 bushels per acre, down 25 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 223 million bushels, down 1% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.45 million acres, is up 11% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from last year.
Sorghum for grain production is forecast at 16.8 million bushels, up 48% from last year. Area for harvest, at 285,000 acres, is up 78% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 59 bushels per acre, down 12 bushels from last year.
