JANUARY 19, 2022:
The completion date for the new bridge over the Missouri River connecting Pierre and Fort Pierre has been pushed back to December 2023.
South Dakota Department of Transportation Pierre area engineer Dean VanDeWiele told the Fort Pierre City Council last night (Jan. 18, 2022) the contractor (Jensen Construction Company) has had difficulty drilling the 9’- 6” diameter shafts.
While the drilling situation gets figured out, VanDeWiele says the contractor is getting work done on other parts of the bridge replacement project.
VanDeWiele says folks can follow the bridge’s progress on SDDOT’s social media or on the Pierre-Fort Pierre bridge website.
The bridge had been scheduled for completion at the end of this year (2022).
JANUARY 18, 2022:
The completion date for the new bridge over the Missouri River connecting Pierre and Fort Pierre has been pushed back to December 2023.
It had been scheduled for completion at the end of this year (2022), but the South Dakota Department of Transportation says the contractor (Jensen Construction Company) has had difficulty drilling the 9’- 6” diameter shafts. The contractor is working with SDDOT and geotechnical and drilling experts to determine the best drilling process to use to finish the underwater shafts. Once the drilled shaft construction plan is completed, a more precise schedule for the John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge can be developed.
The contractor continues to progress on the project by working on the bridge abutments on the Pierre and Fort Pierre sides of the river. Abutment construction is anticipated to continue into March 2022.
