Tom Downs with the National Park Service says the search for Roy Reichle of St. Helena, Nebraska, concluded yesterday (Feb. 17, 2022) when his body was recovered from the Missouri River near Yankton.
At approximately 8:30am Wednesday morning, Feb. 16, Cedar County dispatch notified a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Conservation Officer of an overdue individual in the area of the Highway 81 bridge between Nebraska and South Dakota. This culminated in a multi-agency search involving personnel from the National Park Service, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska State Patrol Troopers including Aviation Support Division and Police Service Dog Division, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Yankton County Emergency Management, Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar County Emergency Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Crofton Volunteer Fire and Rescue, and Wynot Fire Department.
At approximately 12:30pm yesterday, the body of Riechle was discovered and removed from a hole in the ice on a back channel of the river upstream of the Discovery Bridge.
