ABERDEEN – It was hardly artistic, but Lower Brule isn’t giving this back.
Lower Brule held off Castlewood Thursday 51-48 in overtime in the first round of the SDHSAA Class B Boys State Tournament at the Barnett Center. The Sioux make a state semifinal for the first time in school history.
Lower Brule (21-3) scored the only three points of overtime on a Keshaume Thigh field goal with 3:21 remaining and a Gavin Thigh free throw with 43 seconds left. Castlewood (17-7) went 0-for-8 from the floor in overtime, with the last four all being missed three pointers by Tristan Nielsen in the last 24 seconds. Nielsen had made three free throws to force overtime after being fouled with 0.4 left in regulation.
Keshaume Thigh scored 21 points with 10 rebounds for Lower Brule. Gavin Thigh scored nine and Lane Gray had seven.
Nielsen led Castlewood with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
