ABERDEEN – Freeman Academy/Marion has now learned what many other teams have learned: Sometimes, there is no stopping Joe Sayler.
The White River junior scored 43 points with nine rebounds Thursday as the Tigers held on late after losing a big lead in a 75-70 win over Freeman Academy/Marion in a semifinal of the SDHSAA Class B Boys State Tournament at the Barnett Center.
Sayler was 13-of-25 shooting, made three three-pointers, hit 12-of-13 free throws and had four assists. He set a Class B tourney first-round record with his 43 points. Louie Krogman, South Dakota’s all-time leading scorer, had the old record with 40 in 2007.
Dylan Marshall and Nic Marshall each scored nine for White River (20-2).
Connor Epp scored 26 points for Freeman Academy/Marion (21-3). The Bearcats were down by as many as 14 before taking the lead in the third quarter.
