PIERRE – A new procedure to determine enrollment was approved Tuesday during the South Dakota High Activities Association Annual Meeting.
The plan was submitted by the SDHSAA’s Native American Advisory Council and SDHSAA staff. It is designed to protect schools with increasing enrollments that may otherwise be promoted to higher classifications. The premise of the plan is to help schools with many students who qualify for free or reduced lunch but do not have as much access to opportunities for equipment or training, compared to other schools with similar enrollments. A formula was adopted to determine the “adjusted enrollment” of a school. It multiplies the percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch by a maximum of 30 percent.
SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos said that this plan would not affect AA schools, but would keep Lakota Tech and Todd County, both with growing enrollments, in class A.
Member schools will now vote on the proposal which, if approved, would go into effect for the 2024-25 academic year.
The regular board of directors meeting followed, but could not be completed because of the inability to provide a live stream. The meeting is to be concluded Wednesday.
First-reading proposals for rule changes were approved unanimously, including a mercy rule in AA basketball, seed point averages for opponents from out of state, and a final cutoff date for regular season contests. Second readings will be held at the next board meeting on June 9.
