SEATTLE – Distance runner Simeon Birnbaum, who will be a senior this coming school year at Rapid City Stevens, ran a sub-four-minute mile Wednesday in winning the Brooks PR Invitational meet.
Stevens became the just 17th United States high school runner to accomplish the feat, running the mile in 3:59.51, including just over 56 seconds on the final lap, to win the event.
Earlier this year Birnbaum set the South Dakota high school mile record in an event in California, running in 4:07:08. He is the fifth high school runner in the U.S. to break four minutes this year, but only the third junior to ever do so.
