It’s now official. Larry Rhoden is the running mate of Kristi Noem in South Dakota’s 2022 race for governor. Rhoden withstood a challenge from Steve Haugaard to win the nomination at the Republican Party Convention in Watertown on Saturday (June 25, 2022).
In his nominating speech, Rhoden spoke of the need for “unity” within the party.
Haugaard lost to Noem in the Republican Primary for governor.
The Democrat candidate for governor is House Minority Leader Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls.
Delegates also Marty Jackley to be the party’s candidate for Attorney General. He told delegates to the convention if elected to the job he’s held previously, he’ll be tough on crime.
Jackley received 249 votes from delegates in attendance, compared to 181 for David Natvig.
And the delegates picked Monae Johnson as their candidate to run for Secretary of State in the fall election. Johnson defeated current Secretary of State Steve Barnett for the nomination Saturday at the Watertown Event Center.
Here’s what Johnson told the delegates during her nomination speech.
Johnson has worked in the Secretary of State’s office for the past eight years.
Unopposed were Chris Nelson (PUC), Brock Greenfield (Commissioner of School and Public Lands), Josh Haeder (Treasurer) and Rich Sattgast (Auditor).
