RAPID CITY – Henry Hammrich hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to complete a comeback from 5-0 down and give Brookings a 6-5 win over Post 8 in the first round of the Legion state baseball tournament at Fitzgerald Stadium.
Sam Hardin led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, followed by a Lincoln Hardin double. Jack Merkwan then retired the next two hitters before Nathan Lease walked and Hammrich delivered the game-winning hit.
Post 8 jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings and starter Lincoln Kienholz worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second and stranded runners on second and third in the third. Brookings then scored four in the fourth and tied the game with a run in the sixth.
Jett Zabel singled and George Stalley walked with the bases loaded to produce the first-inning runs for Post 8 (19-21). Matthew Hanson hit a two-run single in the second and Kienholz helped himself with an RBI double in the third.
Post 8 will play an elimination game on Thursday at 11:00 AM CT against Brandon Valley.
