RAPID CITY – This time, a close, extra-inning game went Post 8’s way.
Jayden Wiebe hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the eighth inning Thursday to bring in the go-ahead run and give Post 8 a 7-6 win over Brandon Valley in an elimination game of the Senior Legion state tournament at Fitzgerald Stadium.
Post 8 had lost Wednesday 6-5 in eight innings to Brookings in the first round.
Grayson Hunsley walked to start the winning rally Thursday. Brecken Krueger sacrificed Hunsley to second, then Hunsley advanced to third on a wild pitch before Wiebe’s go-ahead hit.
Issac Polak earned the win in relief for Post 8 (20-21). He entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run at third with one out for Brandon Valley, but Polak recorded a strikeout and fly out to force extra innings. Austin Reiter had tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI single.
Aaron Booth earned the save after entering the game in the bottom of the eighth with the tying run on first and nobody out. A wild pitch sent that runner to second, but Booth then struck out Ayden Spicer, Logan Kelling and Matthew Brown to end the game.
Matthew Hanson hit three hits and three RBI for Post 8. After Brandon Valley scored the game’s first two runs in the fourth, Post 8 scored on a wild pitch and a Hanson RBI single in the top of the fifth.
Reiter put Brandon Valley back in front with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Lincoln Kienholz hit a two-run single in the Post 8 sixth to cut the Brandon Valley lead to 5-4. Hanson followed with a two-run single.
Post 8 will play another elimination game at 3:30 PM CT Friday against the loser of Thursday’s game between Mitchell and the Rapid City Post 22 Hardhats.
