OCTOBER 24, 2022:
For the past two years, the federal government has covered the cost of school meals for all students, but that’s not happening this year (2022-23).
Pierre School District Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says schools have resumed the free or reduced cost breakfast, lunch or milk programs. But, he says, parents and guardians who may qualify need to fill out an application.
In a message sent to parents and guardians last week, Food Service Manager Steve McClelland said beginning today (Oct. 24, 2022) if a lunch account reaches certain criteria, the student will not receive a meal and will need to bring their own lunch. Glodt says the message prompted some phone calls to the school district.
Glodt says the district provides an online EZ School Pay option parents can use to keep track of their child’s meal account.
Glodt says they won’t let students go hungry regardless of account status.
This year, the cost of breakfast at Pierre’s elementary, middle and high schools is $2.05, $2.15 and $2.25, respectively. Adult breakfast costs to $2.75. The reduced price cost is 30 cents.
Lunches cost $3.25 for elementary school students, $3.45 for middle school students and $3.60 for high school students. Adult lunches cost $4.50. The price for reduced price lunches is 40 cents.
Individual milk price in the Pierre School District is 50 cents. A 20-day punch card costs $10. The quarter pass is $21 and the school year milk pass is $70. Milk punch tickets and passes are non-refundable.

OCTOBER 21, 2022:
Beginning Monday (Oct. 24, 2022), the Pierre School District will be enforcing its food service charging policy.
In a message sent to parents and guardians this week, Food Service Manager Steve McClelland said if a lunch account reaches certain criteria, the student will not receive a meal and will need to bring their own lunch.
After two years of free school meals because of federal funding, Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says the message was meant to be a reminder for people who may qualify for free or reduced prices meals to get their applications turned in.
Glodt says the district provides an online payment and notification system parents can use to keep track of their child or children’s meal account.
Glodt says they won’t let students go hungry regardless of account status. He says the Pierre School District has received some donations to help cover payment of meal accounts for students who may have a temporary need and they provide certain items the students may eat if they have a delinquent account.
