SIOUX FALLS – When Miller needed big plays in a tough match, their top players came through in the first round of the state tournament.
In their first five-set match this season, the Miller Rustlers rallied from two sets down to defeat Platte-Geddes Thursday, 24-26, 25-27, 25-17, 25-20, 15-8 in the first round of the SDHSAA Class A State Volleyball Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Senior hitters Ally Mullaney, Jaden Werdel and Abigail Blake combined to help lead the comeback for the Rustlers (33-2). Mullaney had a match-high 27 kills of the Rustlers’ 59, two solo blocks and three block assists. Werdel scored eight kills and had 16 digs. Blake had nine kills, an ace, three solo blocks and three block assists.
Miller had won 37 straight sets before dropping the first two Thursday to Platte-Geddes (27-8).
Karly VanDerWerff had 22 kills and Cadence Van Zee had 19 for the Black Panthers.
