RAPID CITY – A day after another frustrating loss to Mitchell, the Pierre Governors found their game again and can still have a 2-1 state tournament.
Ben Heisler poured in 23 points Friday as Pierre defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 56-46 in the consolation bracket of the SDHSAA Boys Class AA State Tournament at the Summit Arena at The Monument.
Heisler, who did not score in the regular season win for Pierre (15-8) over Roosevelt, made 10-of-11 shots and a three-pointer.
Lincoln Kienholz played a strong game with 17 points, shooting 8-of-11, hitting a three-pointer, and pulling down seven rebounds. Jackson Edman scored eight points with 13 rebounds, seven assists, two blocked shots and a steal.
Pierre led by five points at halftime before building the lead to 37-25 2:40 into the third quarter on a Luke Olson jumper. Roosevelt (13-10) then had a 15-3 run, finished by a Jackson Brouwer three-pointer, to cut the Governors’ lead to 41-40 with 6:38 left. Paint baskets by Kienholz and Heisler increased the lead to five before Rilpuou Machol’s driving layup brought the Rough Riders within three at 45-42 with 4:26 left. 46 seconds later, Heisler hit his only three-point try of the game to put Pierre up 48-42 and begin a 11-4 game-ending run.
Jack Radel led Roosevelt with 10 points.
Pierre, with the help of dunks and layups, shot 62 percent from the floor (26-of-42). Edman’s rebounds helped the Governors to a 25-17 rebounding advantage.
