Regarding the passing of South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Randy Seiler of Fort Pierre, acting party Chair Jennifer Slaight-Hansen issued the following statement: “I am in shock. We have lost one of the great leaders of our Party. I personally have lost a mentor and friend. I fall short of words to express my sadness on his sudden passing. I pray his soul rests in peace. I wish Wanda and his family immense strength as they move forward.”
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell of the District of South Dakota issued the following statement on the death of former U.S. Attorney Randy Seiler: “With profound sadness, our office mourns the untimely passing of our friend and former colleague Randy Seiler. Randy served South Dakota for over two decades as a federal prosecutor and, ultimately, as United States Attorney. He led with unparalleled dedication to the cause of justice and equality under the law. Randy was an inspiring and tenacious leader, and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with Randy’s wife, Wanda, and their family during this difficult time.”

APRIL 18, 2023:
South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Randy Seiler of Fort Pierre has died.
His wife Wanda, in a Facebook post, said Seiler collapsed last week (April 13, 2023) while running with their dog at the Oahe Dam. He passed away last night (April 18, 2023) surrounded by family.
Seiler was appointed as the 41st United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota in 2015, serving until 2017. In 2018, Seiler ran for state Attorney General as the Democratic nominee, but was defeated by Republican Jason Ravnsborg. Seiler had also served as a member of the Fort Pierre City Council.
Seiler’s term as state Democratic Party Chair was set to end May 1, 2023. Incoming Party Chair Jennifer Slaight-Hansen will assume all responsibilities until her elected term begins May 1.
Seiler is survived by his wife, Wanda, and four children. Service arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, his family asks people to please consider a donation to one of his many favorite causes such as The Badlands Foundation, the Pat Duffy Community Youth Involved Center or the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department.
