ABERDEEN – The top three seeds, Dell Rapids, West Central and Dakota Valley, secured convincing wins Thursday in the first round of the SDHSAA Class A Softball State Tournament at Players Softball Complex.
Fifth seed Tea Area held off fourth seed Madison.
Dell Rapids 21, Lennox 5
Dell Rapids (12-1) took care of Lennox in only three innings after scoring eight runs in the first inning and 13 in the second. Kylee Fiddelke doubled, tripled and drove in four runs for the Quarriers. Claire Wynja had three hits, including a home run and two doubles, and also drove in four runs.
Carlee Gabriel hit a two-run double for Lennox (5-8).
Tea Area 5, Madison 4
An error by Madison brought home the go-ahead run for Tea Area (11-5). Emersyn Erck hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the fifth inning for the Titans before Madison (15-4) tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Phoebe Corbin hit a two-run single before Sophia Sudenga hit a tying bunt single for the Bulldogs.
West Central 16, Beresford 1
West Central (20-0) easily remained unbeaten with a four-inning run rule win, rapping out 16 hits. Winning pitcher Emillee Stofferahn homered and drove in two for the Trojans, who also had two RBI each from Hanna Raethz, Caitlyn Hoff and Jocelyn Nilson.
Brenna Dann drove in the lone run for Beresford (10-11).
Dakota Valley 15, Elk Point-Jefferson 5
An eight-run fourth inning broke open a one-run game and sent Dakota Valley (17-8) to a five-inning win. Brennan Trotter had a double, single and four RBI for the Panthers. Madelyn Munch was three-for-three with a double and three RBI.
Alyssa Chytka and Nicole Wells each had two hits and an RBI for Elk Point-Jefferson (10-8).
