All in all it’s been a pretty good week. But we can always enjoy some positives stories. So here are some Feel Good Friday stories we’ve compiled just for you this week
1. A mom and daughter from Syria, who came to the U.S. as refugees in 2014, just graduated from college together, with honors. They went to William Paterson University in New Jersey. They both had to work jobs as well to make ends meet.
2. A dad in Tennessee is going viral after he abandoned his dreadlocks, and shaved his head to support his 11-year-old daughter who’s fighting cancer. He hadn’t cut his hair in nine years. (Here’s the full video.)
3. The world’s oldest living cat just celebrated her 32nd birthday. Her name is Rosie, and her owner is still waiting for Guinness to certify it. But the current record-holder is only 27 years old. (Here’s a photo. The record for oldest cat ever still belongs to a cat from Texas named Creme Puff, who died at 38.)
4. A guy named Xavier Huber posted two photos of a firefighter in Long Beach, California named Jeff Ohs, who saved his life 23 years ago. He was two years old, needed CPR, and was in a coma for a month. The first photo shows Jeff carrying him out of a burning building. The second is a recent photo of Jeff meeting Xavier’s SON, who’s around the same age now.
5. An 11-year-old elephant at a wildlife park in Cambodia lost part of his left leg years ago when he got caught in a poacher’s snare. But instead of putting him down, they’ve been making prosthetics for him to get around ever since. He needs a new one every six months, and a charity in the U.K. covers the costs. His newest prosthetic leg weighs 44 pounds, and he gets around on it great. He can walk, run, and even swim in it.
6. A kid from Texas recently left his favorite hat behind while his family was staying at a hotel in Mississippi. And the staff wouldn’t go out of their way to mail it to him. But his mom called a cab company nearby, and they stepped up. The owner picked up the hat and mailed it to him himself. He told a reporter he just likes helping people whenever he can.
7. The North Carolina Zoo announced the birth of triplet sand cat kittens to a first-time mother, Sahara, 3, and father, Cosmo, 9. The sex of the kittens is unknown, and a poll will be held online to find names for them. Sand cats are nocturnal felines native to North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia. The triplets were born as part of the Sand Cat Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
8. A few weeks ago, a military father named Douglas Hernandez surprised his daughter at her UNLV graduation. He traveled more than 30 hours from where he was stationed in the Middle East. His daughter, Pamela, didn’t know he was coming. The two hadn’t seen each other in almost a year.
9. On Monday, Florida deputies were struggling to remove an alligator from a highway . . . when they got some help from Tre Huntoon, a wildlife wrangler and a former cast member of the Animal Planet show “Gator Boys”. (Here’s video of this chaos . . . though it looks like they’ve done this before.)
10. A skin patch to combat peanut allergies in children under the age of 4 has shown to be safe and more effective than a placebo in advanced trials. There’s no word when the patch may be cleared and made available for use.
11. Britain’s “Daily Mail” is suggesting that we might be on the verge of a cancer vaccine for people fighting colon and pancreatic cancers. In human testing, the vaccine showed the potential to lower the risk of relapse in 100% of patients who had surgery to remove their tumors . . . but “still had cancer markers in their blood.” At the start of the trial, nearly all the patients showed signs of their cancer returning. This would be HUGE. Colon cancer is expected to be the #1 cause of cancer deaths by 2030, and pancreatic cancer’s survival rate after five years is just 12.5%.
12. A 14-year-old teenager in Texas has graduated high school, and is headed to the University of Texas at Arlington. Her name is Oforitsenere Bodunrin, and she entered high school at age 10. She plans to study computer science and aviation. It sounds like her family is doing SOMETHING right. Her sister also graduated high school at age 14.
